Among the largest properties available for purchase in the Northwest, Idlewild Canyon is an expansive mountain ranch encompassing nearly 19,000 deeded, contiguous, undeveloped acres with commercial timber, seasonal grazing, recreation, and prominent views of the nearby Cascade Range. The property stretches across the southern face of the Simcoe Mountains 12 miles northeast of Goldendale, WA, county seat for Klickitat County, and 15 miles north of Interstate 84 and the Columbia River. Extensive paved road frontage on US Highway 97 and Box Canyon Road provides easy access to the region’s largest communities including Seattle (four hours), Portland (two hours), Yakima (one hour), and the Tri-Cities (two hours). An extensive interior road system enables one to reach virtually all parts of the ranch while readily available, on-site gravel resources reduce ongoing maintenance concerns.
The ranch’s defining topographic features are Lone Pine Butte, which rises to an elevation of 4,720 feet at the northern edge of the property, and beautiful Idlewild Canyon, the property’s namesake, which is located at the southwest end of the ranch. Timber has been historically managed as both a mixed stand and an uneven aged stand. Currently the predominant stands consist of Douglas fir and ponderosa pine which average approximately 4,400 board feet per acre. Northern portions of the ranch were the victim of wildfire in the fall of 2014. After timber salvage operations, the current owner planted over 425,000 ponderosa pine seedlings in the affected areas. Post-fire seeding efforts continue to thrive, while the remaining intact timber resource is both beautiful and abundant.
Open parks, meadows and ridgelines are interspersed throughout the ranch and support a summer grazing operation and provide excellent habitat for deer, wild turkey, black bear and other wildlife species. The ranch is home to several streams including the Klickitat River which originates in Idlewild Canyon, two forks of Rock Creek, the upper end of Quartz Creek and numerous perennial springs, which together provide ample water for livestock and wildlife alike.
